The ‘Our Valley, Our Future’ project is all about creating a strong, sustainable and vibrant future for everyone who lives, works and plays in the Mitta Valley. One of the results of this project was the Mitta Valley Community Plan 2013-2016.
About the plan
‘Our Valley, Our Future’ and the resulting community plan were collaborations between the Mitta Valley Advancement Forum, the Gardiner Foundation ‘Strengthening Small Dairy Communities' program, Alpine Valleys Dairy Pathways Project and Towong Shire Council.
The project focuses on supporting the local economy, increasing capacity and skills and creating sustainable partnerships. It will bring many opportunities to the area – the opportunity to plan together, to achieve projects, to access funding and to build the Mitta Valley community’s capacity.
Addressing priorities and challenges
Through community research, we identified the following nine challenges and priorities facing the Mitta Valley:
- business and employment
- farming
- tourism
- community infrastructure
- communication
- housing
- opportunities for young people
- ageing population
- social cohesion.
To tackle these challenges, we established priority actions to:
- grow the local dairy industry
- help established businesses be more profitable and productive
- create growth in local tourism
- grow local businesses
- increase new businesses
- effectively market the Mitta Valley.
