Budget 2023/24
Towong Shire Council is proud to announce the release of its Budget 2023/24.
The budget, which was formally endorsed at the Ordinary Council Meeting on 28 June, reflects the Council's dedication to fostering growth and enhancing the local community.
Mayor Andrew Whitehead said that the budget highlights Council’s strategic investments to meet the evolving needs of the community.
“This is a budget of consolidation – it is targeted, considered, delivers on community priorities as outlined in the Council Plan 2021 - 2025 and ensures we are well placed to continue future investment in our communities,” he said.
“We’re prioritising safer and more efficient travel within the Shire. The Budget 2023/24 includes $1.8 million investment in the local road network, an increase of $200,000 from last year,” he said.
“In addition, a capital program of $27.8 million has been allocated to various projects that will shape the future of Towong Shire.”
Some key projects include:
- Corryong CBD upgrades
- Wises Creek Road upgrade in Talgarno
- Corryong Heavy Vehicle Bypass (upgrade) Project
- Corryong Skate Park
- Mitta Streetscape
- Playground for Bellbridge Early Years
- Yabba Road upgrade in Tallangatta
To align with the State government's Fair Go Rates System, the Budget 2023/24 incorporates a rate increase of 3.5%. This moderate increase ensures continued service delivery while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
In response to rising waste transportation and processing costs, as well as the introduction of an organics kerbside collection service early in 2024, the kerbside collection charge will increase by 25% ($82 - $102). This addition aligns with the State Government's Circular Economy Policy, promoting sustainable waste management practices. There will be no increase to the Waste Facilities Management charge in 2023/24.
Recognising the significant increase in rural property valuations, Council has increased the discount for rural properties, acknowledging the unique challenges faced by rural landholders.
