The Great Victorian Bike Ride is coming to Tallangatta!

On Tuesday 27th November this year, between 3000 and 4000 riders and support staff will stay overnight at the Tallangatta Showgrounds.

The GVBR is a non-competitive, fully supported annual bicycle touring event organised by Bicycle Network Victoria.

The first ride was held in 1984, attracting 2100 riders in what was initially supposed to be a one-off event. Due to its unexpected popularity and success, it subsequently became an annual event.

The GBVR's overnight stay in Tallangatta will bring many benefits for the local community, with the ride providing not only direct benefits from the stay but also ongoing benefits from repeat visitation.

Figures show that:

  • More than 60% of riders indicated they spent more than $20 per day
  • 37% of riders spent more $40 per day
  • Based on those figures, approximately $100,000 per day is injected into the local communities.

Repeat visitation:

  • 74% of respondents said they were likely to return to one of the towns visited within 12 months
  • 42% said they would bring an additional person
  • 21% said they would bring more than one additional person
  • Based on those figures, there is a possibility of an extra 5200 visits.

In addition to these benefits for businesses, local community and sporting groups also have the opportunity to fundraise at the event.

Some of the opportunities for fundraising include:

  • Egg and bacon rolls for breakfast
  • Hot chips sale at the 'big screen' in the evening
  • Baked goods stall on-site in the afternoon or evening
  • Ice cream van.

Towong Shire Council will be working with local businesses, as well as community and sporting groups, to help them better understand how they can leverage off the event.

The first community workshop will be held on Wednesday 18 July, from 2pm to 4pm, at Tallangatta Integrated Community Centre. To your interest in attending contact Council's Economic Development Officer Kerissa Heritage via
