Vaccines available
All vaccines on the National Immunisation Program Schedule are free of charge. However, the vaccination for influenza, whooping cough and hepatitis A and B may incur a fee for certain sections of the community. You will need to phone and book in for these and it is best to enquire if you qualify at the time of booking.

Influenza vaccinations
Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is caused by a highly contagious virus. In general, influenza viruses are spread in two ways:

  • Respiratory droplets from an infected person’s cough or sneezes (these droplets generally travel less than one metre); and
  • Touching contaminated surfaces (including hands) and then touching your mouth, nose or eyes.  Proper hand washing and covering of mouth and nose when coughing/sneezing can protect you and others from a range of diseases.

Influenza vaccinations are available during the months of April and May at all Towong Shire public immunisation sessions.

The composition of the influenza virus vaccine in 2014 is:

  • A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like virus
  • A/Texas/50/2012 (H3N2)-like virus
  • B/Massachusetts/2/2012-like virus

Seasonal influenza vaccine is recommended and free for all people who are at high risk of a poor outcome after influenza infection, including:

  • All people aged 65 years and older;
  • Pregnant women;
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 15 years and older; and
  • Everyone aged from six months and over with medical conditions that put them at risk of complications from influenza infection.

Members of the public who don’t fall under any of the categories listed above may receive the flu vaccination for $21.00 (GST free). Payment is required at the time of vaccination (cash and correct money required).
