In 2011/2012 Towong Shire Council facilitated an extensive township-wide planning project for Tallangatta, called ‘Tallangatta Tomorrow’. This exciting $165,000 project involved comprehensive research, consultation and engagement with residents, visitors, businesses and community groups to devise strategies to prepare Tallangatta for a vibrant future and to enable it to reach its potential as a prosperous regional township.
The project received a strong response from both the local community and others interested in the future of Tallangatta with 400 surveys returned, 3000 hits on the website and 300 individuals participating in focus groups. During the consultation phase, over 450 big ideas were submitted by residents, visitors and businesses. The community identified and prioritised key projects that would support a vibrant and sustainable future.
Melbourne-based architectural firm, Clarke Hopkins Clarke, played a key role in the facilitation and design of the masterplan.
The Tallangatta Eco-Education and Integrated Services Centre, a key project identified through the 'Tallangatta Tomorrow' consultation, has received $2.2 million in funding from the Victorian State Government. The Centre will incorporate childcare and kindergarten services, a business centre and community space in addition to the new library with a total investment of $2.6 million once completed. Construction is due to be completed in 2016.
The $1.3 million Tallangatta Multi-Sport Precinct was also borne out of the masterplanning process where the community identified the need for a new facility to cater for the various sporting and other groups that used Rowen Park.The new Tallangatta Multi-Sport Precinct building will provide change rooms for football, cricket, netball and swimming club usage, together with a kitchen and function room. This improved community facility will support increased levels of participation through the provision of a positive recreational and sporting environment; an incentive for local people to get involved in recreational pursuits.
Other major projects that have arisen out of 'Tallangatta Tomorrow' and have been delivered include:
- The $1.615m Sandy Creek Bridge – a cycle and walking bridge on the old railway line east of Huon connecting the High Country Rail Trail;
- The $104,000 Tallangatta Bowls Club redevelopment;
- Tallangatta Lookout redevelopment; and
- Lord’s Hut relocation
Council continues to work with government funding partners and the community to realise the remaining ‘big ideas’ from the plan including:
- Tallangatta Holiday Park Feasibility Study and concept design;
- Tallangatta Foreshore concept design;
- Tallangatta Zen Village masterplan and concept design; and the
- Tallangatta streetscapes concept design.
An exciting announcement took place in December 2015 where Council was granted $2.65m to undertake the Destination Tallangatta project. This project will deliver aspects of the Tallangatta Streetscape, Tallangatta Foreshore and Tallangatta Holiday Park concept designs.
Regular communication about this project will take place as the project is delivered throughout 2016-2020.
